‘Dog Named Beans’ (title chosen by Ellie, 6) is a visual study of the identities, aspirations and dreams of a young group of dancers in Wales developed from using collaborative methodologies to drive the narrative. The images (and text) used, selected by both children and photographer aim to represent each child as an individual and works in collaboration with them to determine location, clothing and narrative in the images taken.
Children offer an escape into a childish world full of power, fluidity and imagination, even during lockdown they man- aged to keep hold of their desire to perform. Every day they present different versions of themselves. The project aims to challenge the balance of power and representation between the photographer and subject by giving the children most of the control.
